"The Path" is a work of love and creativity; the culmination of 17 years of playing the didgeridoo. Produced and engineered by close friend Eltjo de Vries, ‘The Path’ follows a musical journey and story. Here are the stories of how each song came into ‘being’:(Tracks in order of album) Escape - a finger picking, folk-rock song all about getting away from it all, ditching the rat race and embracing the wild joy of being out in the ocean. The song is in two parts, the latter half bringing in the didgeridoo and a heavier guitar sound. Mootstone - named after the monolith on the Isle of Wight, the Longstone. Mootstone is it’s old name, meaning ‘meeting stone’. This magical place is near where Joe grew up, and was a place where he has always found solace and peace. This track is based around the didge, stomp box and Eclipse drum. Alimah - this song was named by Becky and is the Arabic word for one who ‘is gifted in song and dance’. Becky’s fiddle playing on this is stunning, weaving sensuously between the percussive sound of two djembes and the didge. Siphon - a song I have been playing live for several years now. It has changed and developed as time has gone on. The F didge on this track was made from a gorgeous piece of yew, cut by a tree surgeon friend of mine, from the grounds of Carisbrooke Castle. The First Didge - Eltjo tells the story of the first didge, a great way of introducing the tones of the next track… Bioluminescence/Stargaze - inspired by a snorkelling experience last summer, when my breath was taken away by the bioluminescence I saw in the sea, and later the stars and moon on a perfect night on the beach. The Eclipse played on this song expresses the feelings of wonder that the natural world brings to the heart. Spirit of the Hunter - Eltjo is a professional storyteller, and he finishes the story of the first didge here, adding some fantastic throat singing to the background. He learnt to do this when we spent time at the Midsummer Gathering this year. Babinda - a new song with a very tribal feel, clapsticks, didge and djembe creating a trance inducing sound. Eltjo really thought about the effect of the didge on the listener with this one…his effects of fading the drums and didge in and out and from ear to ear create a really ambient head state. Babinda is an Aboriginal sacred site, it holds a dark tale. Search it on the net and have a read… Lady of the Woods - is the result of a jamming session between Joe and singer/songwriter Keri Highland. Keri’s freeform vocals on this track are atmospheric and the didgeridoo sings in unison with her. The didge used, made by Joe during Beltane in 2010, is made from a birch sapling. Birch is the tree of the maiden aspect of the triple Goddess in paganism. The slender, graceful tree is also known as the Lady of the Woods. Chameleon - another live favourite, this track is staccato style didge playing with cajon and has a real groove. Zenith - this a unusual song…starting off with slide guitar, going into grunge sounding reggae with didge and melodica and ending in a thunderstorm…courtesy of Eltjo. Nuin - Joe was kindly gifted a didge during the summer solstice by Rich, the didge player of the much loved band, Astral Circus. Sadly this band is no longer playing, but Joe has loved playing this didge and recorded this track with it. Its voice has since been heard at several gigs and festivals. Rich made the didge from an ash tree and the Gaelic name for this tree is Nuin. Blessings to Rich J The Path - the lyrics for this were written by Joe after he went to the Samhain celebration at the Longstone last year with Eltjo. Bloodstone Border Morris was there and performed before the rites to mark the start of the pagan New Year. The gathering of like-minded souls on this cold and windswept day prompted Joe to play his didge by the sacred site and to share the sentiments of those there by writing this song. Oldlands - is a mellow ending to the album, a slide guitar number with birds singing melodically till the close.
