Serge Gainsbourg may primarily have been known outside his native land for the heavy breathing masterpiece 'Je T'Aime', the only French song ever to top the British charts, but to those at home he stood as one of the most potent cultural figures of post-war France. His poetry was compared to Rimbaud and Baudelaire, his morality to Marquis de Sade, yet he was rewarded the Chevalier Des Arts et Lettres, his country's highest artistic honour.
