Midnight Door (Cellist Luke Janela and a collection of musicians including Adam Carson of AFI and Molly Allis) paints epic landscapes of sound using an emotive cello as the primary muse, and a wide ranging, emotional voice as its compliment. The music is urgent and innovative, moving from punk to classical to electronic as a cohesive, contemporary whole. It's hard to spot the influence in his sound, and that is a good thing. Midnight Door's music blasts forward full force with assured conviction.In Luke Janela's hands, the cello acts less as a classical instrument transported into the rock world than as a fully formed baroque buzzsaw capable of combusting through rock music's"3 chords & the truth" policy. And yet in moments of sweet sonic revery, the improvisations floating over deep and resonant beats will twinkle with hints of Bach. It is less spectacle than revelation and reverence that Midnight Door molds with its sound.
