His contributions to the Nordic piano literature is significant, and many of his pieces have retained their popularity, often featuring wistful, melancholy tunes. He made frequent use of Finnish folk music in his works, which its distinct character. Although not virtuosic in the traditional sense, many of his works still require a very nuanced technique, with quasi impressionist use of the pedal in order to do them justice.
