Brief HistoryBack in April of 2002, frustrated with the confines of the traditional rock outfit, P. Sir VZOnd V. von RICCI formed MAHI MAHI. a two-pieceproject built to make unconventional dance music without the use of sequencing.There was no particular vision, initially. The two just fired up what they had for equipment to workwith (VZO drum kit, electronic drum triggers / VVRmid 60s Acetone organ, some vocal effects) and just began playing. A sound was immediately found, byaccident, and within a couple of weeks, they had a set of music to work with.Because of their differing backgrounds in music, the songs were quite unique. VVR's rock'n'rollelectronic / no wave influences echoed a new generation of Suicide or Teenage Jesus angst with the hopefulness of Bowie ala Diamond Dogs.While VZO'srprog trip hop / rorock'n'roll influences held solid, innovative beats that sizzled like Tricky with the thunderous precision of John Bonham.This mistaken sound gained them instant recognition in the Providence"noise music" scene.From the moment they took the stage at the MunchHouse, in Olneyville Rhodesland, dressed all in white, armed with their own sound system and flashingred and blue lights, they earned a following.The live sound was very important to them, so they have, from the very beginning, had their own sound system and shaped their own sound. This has prproven to be an advantage. Amidst all different bands who have been"wronged" by their sound-men,MAHI MAHI has complete control of their mix, leaving just the final equalization, through the club'ssystem, to the sound-man. Most sound-men like this.Within a year, they were to release"HE NO WA". The title of the album taken from some of VVR'syricalscat-gibberish that consumed more than half of the record (he had to listen back to the masters anddecipher the"lyrics" that would be printed in the CDsleeve). They recorded the album themselves and mixedit with the help of a friend, Frank Difficult."HE NO WA" was well received in Providence, Boston, and NewYork, getting mixed reviews and charting on college radio stations across the globe.Their sound, however, was only in it's fetal state. These two did not fear growth. In fact, they embrace it. The more they wrote together, the better they got to know each other, and themselves musically. They would shed set after set of music, like a snake sheds it's once beautiful skin, to reveal a newer, better version of MAHI MAHI. VZO began to incorporate more bass lines into his contribution, freeing up VVR to focus more on his synthesizer and vocal intricacies, not to mention creating a one man rhythm-section (tight). These breakthroughs, coupled with some maturing in the song-writing department, helped to etch their more"current" sound. This sound can be heard on theirmost recently released,"(RE)Move Your Body"."(RE)Move Your Body" took two months to record and was the last session ever at Providence's Sound Station Seven, a recording studio founded by Engineer/Producer John Jacobson. John saw something that he liked in MAHI MAHI's music and decided to make"(RE)Move Your Body" his"swan song", so to speak. The three worked closely on this record and the end result is quite solid. It's dancy butdark. It's hopeful, but condemning. Quite timely.MAHI MAHIs currently working on new material (as always) and planning to tour to promotethemselves. They currently reside in Providence,Rhodesland.
