Matthew Squires and The Learning Disorders’ unique brand of raw, lyrically-oriented indie pop songs alternate between the outlandish and the sparse, between disorder and tranquility. The most striking contradiction, however, lies in the seamless coexistence of joy and suffering—both of which find a home in these heartfelt indie folk songs. 10 months after the release of their well received first LP, the group has recorded a second album, “You Are Everything or: The Art of Being Nothing in Particular”. To fund the project, Squires launched a Kickstarter, enticing potential backers with the promise of a “really elegant album.” Now the album is complete, and it’s fair to say that Squires has more than kept that promise, crafting a full-length that astonishes as much for its insightfulness as for the fact that it is a damn pleasure to listen to. “You Are Everything,” while very accessible, is a complex and rich work, with more to be uncovered from each listen. The songs swerve and surprise but never unsettle; they take the listener by the hand and lead them home.
