Based in Durban, South Africa, Quark is a collaboration between bassist Dan Wilson and singer-guitarist Fiona Tozer. Fusing various styles of music, we have created a collection of songs that will take you on a journey of discovery through space and time. Our music features acoustic guitar, bass and voice, as well as loops. We aim for the unexpected and don’t fit into any particular category easily – maybe it could be described as contemporary folk fusion. The lyrics of the songs explore the place of the human race in the cosmos. We hope you will be transported by the music.Coming from a folk music background, Fiona is a songwriter and guitarist, and has played at venues and festivals around South Africa. With three CDs of original songs to her credit, she branched out from the folk scene in 2001 to take a music degree in contemporary classical composition.Dan Wilson has played with a lot of diverse people like steel guitar legend Mike Cooper, the Waterboys, Annette Peacock, Syd Kitchen and RISE. He has released five albums with Creeper, an acid jazz outfit featuring saxophonist Luke Townsend, and played on several albums by local and international musicians including ‘Africa’s not for Sissies’ by Syd Kitchen. Dan’s album ‘Max Roach Park’ with UK drummer Mark Huggett was nominated for a SAMA for best jazz album in 2006. He plays 5 string electric fretted and fretless basses.
