This is the story of Doc Scratchy, a psychiatrist from the year 2738 who invents a way to fully remove the feeling of melancholy from people. He chooses not to share his research with humanity however, in order to preserve the full range of human emotion. He liquidizes all his assets and leaves earth to explore the outer colonies. He falls in love with an AI called GiNA. He visits many worlds. Each habitable planet has been colonized by a few thousand settlers, and if their planet has a useful resource, it will attract more people. Otherwise they will live in their secluded world, without the resources to leave. He finds a planet like this, called Candy. Their planet will be destroyed by solar storms just a few weeks after he arrives there. The people who live on Candy don’t believe it will really happen.He leaves, but realizes that he is ready to go back and die with the community of Candy. So he returns, just in time.
