Laura Reznek is a Vancouver based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose smoky soprano melodies and piano-driven compositions have evolved into her own unique brand of punchy cabaret-pop. Fascinated by the culture, history, and the familial bonds that bind generations together, Laura’s music is equally influenced by her father's South African heritage and her mother’s abiding love for Elton John. Having completed programs in both contemporary jazz vocal performance and sound engineering, Laura’s approach to writing has matured seamlessly over the course of her first full length release How Strange to Find you Here (2013) and has culminated into her most sophisticated collection of works yet with her upcoming release Who Came Before Us.Highlights from the album include “Be My City” and “Wild”, both of which challenge humanity’s control over nature, and “Apparition,” which dramatizes human beings’ return to an animal state at the end of our lives. “Ones You Love” is a melodically hypnotic album opener sung from the perspective of several children in an old Victorian photograph. The final song, fittingly titled “Back Again,” is composed in the medieval Dorian mode, resulting in a progression that manages to sound ancient, contemporary, reassuring, and sinister all at the same time. Full of ups and downs, twists and turns, evocative mythologies and stark realism, Who Came Before Us is neither a question nor a statement, but rather a stream of possibilities.
