The sound design for Canopy was unlike anything I've ever worked on… the film has barely any dialogue, no traditional score and follows two young soldiers who don't share a common language, both lost, surviving and enveloped by a lush foreign jungle war zone. This intriguing, observational perspective is what initially excited us so much about the project... The space. This space and meditative pace of the film opened up the opportunity of creating an immersive, explorative and unique cinematic experience. Sonically, we begin gradually transcending from the immediate, diegetic reality with the protagonist at the beginning of the film, into an increasingly fragmented and synaesthetic first person pastiche of his thoughts, emotions, dreams, memories, and with our collective ineffable interconnection with nature and each other.Using a large collection of recordings of the Singaporean jungle, captured at all times of the day and night, we designed and built up many layers of digitally processed organic atmospheres and textures for each scene - crunchy squishy foley, deep stretched breath drones and modulated reverberant insects - sometimes peaceful, harmonic, almost musical - other times dense, powerful, dark and overwhelming. The flow of the film's sound design and deep moods further inspired the concept and creation of this album, as an ambient soundscape adaptation of those dream spaces, and an opportunity to use elements of the original sound design in a new but similarly immersive way. The music was produced fundamentally by layering, processing and manipulating jungle and foley recordings to create harmonic and ambient elements or hyperreal engaging environments. These elements were mixed with some organic instruments, recorded vocals and synths to create melodic phrases, deep evolving pads, ominous drones and earthy textures. Thanks to Aaron Wilson, Rodney Lowe, Les Molnar and team Canopy for inspiring and motivating this release, Leesa and Eric for your beautiful hearts and voices and anybody out there that stops to listen in.
