In the early 1990s, Joe Lawless began an infrequent solo performer career in metropolitan Detroit. Lawless could be seen at coffee houses in Royal Oak, Ferndale and St. Clair Shores and Pontiac and at larger venues in Detroit like St. Andrews Hall and Alvins supporting local bands like Strange Bedfellows and Discipline.Discipline's Matthew Parmenter suggested that Lawless' songs would benefit from a full-band treatment. So Parmenter and Lawless, along with Discipline drummer, Paul Dzendzel set to work arranging a batch of them. A few months later, with a very small budget they recorded this album at Western Sound Studios in Kalamazoo with Ben Richards engineering. The recordings are mostly dry and the simple arrangement of acoustic guitar, bass, drums and vocals (with the exception of a drop of keyboards on one track) works and accurately represents how the trio sounded when playing live. The songs are fun, and sometimes a little too delighted in themselves. Stronger in wordplay than overall vision, performed with a curious vocal style -- but nonetheless, fresh and punchy.Joe Lawless went on to play with The Shorewoods, from Seattle in the early 00s and currently plays with Trevor and The Joneses, from Las Vegas (both have albums available here at CDbaby).Matthew Parmenter and Paul Dzendzel continue to record and perform with Discipline and other acclaimed artists.
