Me Strong is an acoustic ballad that illustrates the support female friendship provided to me while battling cancer. In July 2011, at 43, I received frightening news that I had a recurrence of cervical cancer. Research told me that I had a 15% chance of winning. Sadly, it’s rare to find someone who hasn’t been touched by cancer. The lyrics speak to the fact that nobody is immune to the disease: “Millions strong we’re all on the same team. Big cities and small towns we share a common theme. We’ll all work and fight, do headstands day and night, she’ll smile at us and say let’s run for the dream”. When I found out the cancer was gone, my friend and I posted a headstand picture on Facebook. Our friends and families knew that if we did headstands, the cancer was gone. Hundreds of people joined us by posting headstand pictures on our pages. We turned cancer upside down. After 8 long rounds of chemo, I won. Ironically, I was at the peak of my physical fitness when I was diagnosed because I had spent the six months prior training to run a marathon. During that time, I developed an inner strength that helped me in the fight of my life. I believe that it is no coincidence that I began the journey fighting cancer while I was in the best shape of my life. My core group of friends organized a 5k in my honor. There were close to 1000 participants at the inaugural event in our small community. My dream is that we are all prepared for the race of our lives. It's my goal to see everyone make a commitment to living healthier lives, so when they are faced with the fight of their lives their bodies are prepared mentally and physically to do it well. If you are battling or have a friend who is battling, know that there is hope. There is always hope. It was my choice to battle cancer with health, laughter and friendship. You can too.
