This was a very fun song to record. This song was never actually written. I had just bought a new guitar and mixing board and wanted to try them out. It was Christmas eve and they were my Christmas presents to myself. I plugged the gear in and went back to a track that I was building but really had no direction as to where I was taking the song. As I recall, it was one take. I pressed record on the computer, started the track and started playing. When it was finished, all the song needed was a final EQ. I loved what I had just created. I have tried learning the song and performing it, but no matter what I do, it has never come out as good as this recording. A NEW BEGINNING - This song was originally on the CD entitled A New Beginning. A girl called me and asked me to produce her record. I said sure, but wanted to make sure she was good enough to market. I started writing material and came up with this Britney Spears type song. I don't remember what it was called. Well, when she showed up, all I can say is, it wasn't pretty. So, I took the song, slowed it down about 10-15 bpm, added a delay over the whole track and wrote a new song over the track. So, if you take this song, remove the delay from the track, remove the guitar and speed it up, itll sound like a pop song. THE INTIMIDATOR - For any Nascar fan, The Intimidator is known as Dale Earnhardt Sr. I was a huge fan of Earnhardt before his death in 2001. This song was written in tribute to him. This song is song #3 on both this CD and JeRQ THIS, in tribute to the #3 on his car. Being a 7 minute, this song has to take you on a journey. It starts out with a nice balanced pace symbolizing his career. A man with a goal and a passion to be the best he can be. A third of the way through the song, things go haywire with a crazy guitar solo symbolizing the top of his career with his Daytona 500 wins. Two-thirds of the way through the song, it seems to come to an end symbolizing his big crash at Daytona. Though his life was ended, his legacy was not. The song goes back to the original groove proving that though he may not be with us anymore, he will forever be known as one of the greatest race car drivers in history.SHADES OF SUMMER - Shades of Summer was originally on One Long Road released in December 2004. I really had no direction as to where I wanted to take this song. I just wanted to write a pretty song and I am really happy with how this turned out. Once it was complete and I started performing on my tour for the Solo-Fisticated CD, the audience loved it. CITY LIGHTS - This is a great song and was a lot of fun to record. From the A New Beginning CD in 2007, this song is an ode to Sacramento, California. It meantions"the heights", referring to Del Paso Heights, a division of Sacramento, then goes into saying"Up ahead I see the city lights", referring to the Sacramento skyline. The guitar is especially beautiful in this song. I love the tonal qualities of the guitar and the groove kicks. ONE LONG ROAD - Written in 2004 for the One Long Road CD. This song was my little anthem to my tour and boy was it a long road. Like the AC/DC song,"Its a long way to the top, if you want to Rock N Roll". Thats pretty much what I saying here without any words of course. I try not to sing much, as I don't like my singing voice usually. I try to make the guitar tell the story. I wanted to rock and dang it, thats what I was going to do. BELIEVE - Believe was written for the JeRQ THIS CD in 2005. I had so much fun writing and recording this CD that I believed that is was going to do extremely well. And well, it did. The JeRQ THIS was the best selling record to date. The tour from that CD was awesome. We had such a great time meeting the new fans and playing all the new venues. This song goes much deeper than another fun song though. In the opening of the song, you will hear a whistling noise. Believe it or not, that is actually a guitar, and no its not effects. Here's how I got the sound. Take you wah pedal and plug the input into the output and output into the input, basically plug it in backwards. Turn the guitar all the way up and use your tonal knobs and volume knobs to manipulate the signal. Then use your wah. You have to do it all very very slowly to make any kind of noise with this technique. I used to offer free CDs on tours if anybody could tell me how I got that noise of the guitar. Needless to say, I never gave any free CDs out. HYPERSPEED TO TOKYO - Now this is an awesome song. Recorded in 2005 for the JeRQ THIS CD. The song opens up with this futuristic sound. All of those futuristic sounds in the intro are really played on the guitar. To get the weird sounds in the first solo, I used a heavy delay to space the notes exactly apart with placing each note. When I wrote the song, I thought it sounded like Dance Dance Revolution which is very popular in Japan as well as sounded really space age, so I thought it was be appropriate to call it Hyperspeed to Tokyo. FEEL YOUR LOVER - There comes a point when we all need to take a minute and think about what we have. Most of us have a person we love and that loves us, but sometimes we don't think about how special it is to have that other person. This song, written in 2007 was designed for you to take a minute to Feel Your Lover. Enjoy it. SUBMERGED - This is an awesome song from JeRQ THIS in 2005. Submerged was written as a jam and nothing more than that. The track was written and put into a delay to get a deeper effect. The guitars were then added and as it turns out was a hit on the JeRQ THIS Tour in 2005. THE HITCHHIKER - The Hitchhiker was probably the hardest song I have had to record. Recorded in 2004, this song symbolizes a guy walking along the side of the road in the rain trying to get a ride. As you will hear throughout the song, its raining and cars are passing, and the sound of the rain splashing under the tires adds to the effect of the hitchhiker. So how did I get this song to work so well? I had to wait for a good rain. I took the microphone out on to the patio and at the time, I lived next to a very busy street. I had to cover the microphone so it didnt get wet, but still needed to capture the sound of the cars passing. After I got the sound of the cars and rain, then I needed to write a pretty ballad. Finding the right notes was probably the easiest part of the song. Put all of those elements to together and you get The Hitchhiker. WALKING MAN - Written in 2005 for the JeRQ THIS CD, this song was a lot of fun to record. I called it Walking Man because when playing the chorus, it feels like your fingers are walking on the fretboard of the guitar. Also, the wah pedal goes WAH WAH WAH WAH throughout the chorus, so again, its like walking. Learn to play it and enjoy. Its really fun. JERQ THIS - One day in 2004, somebody online called me a jerk using my initials JRQ, spelling it JeRQ. So when recording the follow up record to One Long Road, I needed a good name for it. JeRQ kind of stuck with me, but I couldnt just name it JeRQ. So what about JeRQ THIS. Everybody I talked to about it loved it. From that point on I havent looked back. While recording the record, I needed a really wild song that would get the crowd going while on tour. I thought a song with the same name would be good. JeRQ THIS was born. Thanks for reading and enjoy the CD.
