Formed in 2011, Clearspring is comprised of Matthew Geiger, Eric Knowles, John Leatherman, and Jason Hannan. Since its inception, Clearspring has been dedicated to performing energetic, hard driving bluegrass. Stars in the City, recorded in 2013, is the band's second album. It features the strong lead singing of Matthew Geiger and showcases the band's breathtaking three and four part harmonies; as well as driving instrumental work.Highlights start with the first track, a blistering cover of Townes Van Zandt's White Freightliner, which features the band's strong vocal trio of Eric Knowles, Matthew Geiger, and Jason Hannan; as well as Knowles' driving banjo work. The album's second track, Bill Monroe's Kentucky Waltz, shows off mandolinist John Leatherman's unique playing style and Geiger's compelling vocals. Another highlight is the title track, Stars in the City. Written by Jason Hannan and his daughter Katie, this song spotlights Jason's high lead vocals and tight harmonies by Geiger and Knowles. The album closes with a gospel song, Bill Monroe's River of Death.
