Anthony Frazer is a Sydney, Australia-based singer/songwriter/instrumentalist who writes country/folk songs of honesty and clarity, songs which are drenched in old sounds of country, AM rock, and what he describes as, “That old, elusive, hard to define, woody folk sound.” As a member of the Sydney based band The Richest Men in Town, Anthony writes and performs songs inspired by his love of songwriters such as Jeff Tweedy, Bob Dylan, Willy Vlautin, Jay Farrar, Robbie Robertson, Neil Young, Townes Van Zandt, Gram Parsons. Anthony says these songwriters sit perfectly comfortably with Australian songwriters who have been just as inspirational to him – David McComb, Robert Forster, Grant McLennan and so on.Anthony has been sequestered in his house a long time, writing & arranging new songs, recording them on his 8 track recorder, getting the sounds he hears in his head down on tape (or hard drive). These songs are now ready to be sent out into the world, blinking in the light, glad to have been given a life of their own. There’s a tempered down sound to these songs, an attempt to capture that quiet, plaintive Sunday night feeling. These recordings are sometimes set firmly in the past, like short stories. The song ‘The Shape We’re In’ could be sung by an imaginary George Jones type tragic character, whereas other songs are more directly personal, like the paean to his wife and family ‘These Days Are Golden Days’. Others, such as ‘There’s No Space in My Heart’ take their time to tell the story and are steeped in old dark country imagery. Anthony says “There’s the sound of pedal steel constantly in my head which I wish was there on tape….but I’ll get to that someday soon.”Apart from the pedal steel guitar, which was performed by the sublime master of steel, Barry Turnbull, Anthony played all of the instruments on these recordings – acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, drums, piano, Rhodes piano, Hammond B3, as well as lead and backing vocals.
