About the albumIn Greek, there are three primary words for our English “love.” Agape denotes selfless, unconditional, or divine love. Eros is self-centered love that stimulates and gratifies desire and it is contrasted with both agape and philia, a third kind of love. Philia is most often used to convey the feelings that accompany friendship, companionship, and even objects or activities that one enjoys. “Sides of Love” explores these three varieties of the experience of loving.The first song, “Love Is,” is based on I Corinthians 13, the familiar “love chapter.” The seventh song, “For God So Loved the World,” is taken from John 3:16, probably the most often-quoted passage from the New Testament – it summarizes the message of the Gospels. The last song, “When I Delight,” describes God’s love for us; it draws upon Ephesians 3. The rest of the songs are less Scriptural – or are they really? In 1 John 4, we read that God is love and that in essence, all love has its origins in God. In fact, if God instituted marriage between one man and one woman, and if we believe that God commands a man to love his wife, then maybe it’s a good thing for a man to sing a love song to her. This disc is intended to be the first part of a larger project on this theme – love.
