Five of the West Coast’s leading jazz musicians came together for an extraordinary two night, live-concert recording session before capacity audiences at an intimate jazz club in Victoria, BC. Featuring nine MacNayr originals, The Measure of Light was crafted specifically for these musicians bringing together rich & diverse musical influences. The Measure of Light unites some of the world’s best creative musicians, engineers and producers to create a truly exceptional album. With the combined talents of MacNayr, legendary saxophonist & Juno Award winner Phil Dwyer, renowned trumpeter Daniel Lapp, brilliant pianist Miles Black & acclaimed American bassist Tom Wakeling, the musical alchemy ignited on stage. The album captures this explosive spontaneity with studio-session sonic brilliance resulting from a unique post-production collaboration between MacNayr and pop-music icon and celebrated producer Gino Vannelli. Words from the composer:The Measure of Light is a collection of songs made from stories and ideas, sounds and meaning. These songs draw inspiration from people, places and experience; from moments both finite and infinite. When we are lucky, we bring our whole lives with us into our art. Miles Black, Dan Lapp, Phil Dwyer & Tom Wakeling bring their masterful musicianship, artistic depth and true collaborative spirit together to breathe life into these songs/ stories.Light is always, by nature, travelling; in metamorphosis. It is a medium through which we catch reflections, perspective, perhaps a glimpse into worlds previously un-seen. In The Measure of Light, we hope to share a glimpse into our own sounds, stories and imagination. In a way, these songs travel until they reach you and once again, change shape and become something new.Phil Dwyer Tenor/ Soprano SaxDaniel Lapp TrumpetMiles Black PianoTom Wakeling BassKelby MacNayr Drums/ CompositionProduced by Kelby MacNayrMixing and post-production by Gino VannelliRecorded by Aaron ScoonesMastered by Nick Moon at Tone Proper StudiosAll Songs by Kelby MacNayr © 2012
