Apex Realm, coming out of our very own chula vista, communicates the simple, the profound, and everything in between without shirking out on straight-up style. three emcees: skelly, lethargik, and okie dokes backed by producer ta’ras (aka ‘chief lion’) spit rhymes of redemption and lines of pure luminosity against beats that pay tribute to a time when the word ‘music’ was synonymous with the word ‘soul.’ their deput ep, entitled “Event’s Horizon,” contains six jammin tracks that celebrate the love of life, the mystery of the unknown, and the wonder of the transcendent. each emcee offers a fresh interpretation around the beat, from the rapid ratta-tat-tat of skelly to the laid back lines of lethargik, to the punchy slurs of okie dokes. i hear ta’ras gets every beat from his personal vinyl collection. very nice. check out the ominous horns on “dogs for dinner” or the relaxing piano riffing on “thanks.” you’ll know what i mean. with lines like “leave it up to Apex to channel through the barricades, blast through the negative, takin’ down their masquerade “ it’s guaranteed that you’d find yourself entering a meditative state of intense self-reflection while bobbing your noggin to the beats.Apex sustains my hope that there is still some quality music to be discovered on the vast interweb of seemingly infinite confusion. i’d have to appreciate how these guys offer a glimmer of light inside a tunnel saturated with illusions upon distractions. Apex brings us back to the ground, but not before throwing us up into infinity. i can tell that the boys read into the words of the wise elders, and seamlessly transer these principles into the minds of dreamers like you and me, in the fashion of true poets. catch these guys at a show sometime. we’ll be posting updates on the next times they’ll be spitting wisdom. - Raineir G.
