Sara Judge has been playing music in Philadelphia, New York, and New Jersey since she was 12 years old. Generally playing alone or with a mandolin and fiddle player, Sara's music is all original, and her songs reflect a unique East Coast sound in the tradition of troubadours with attitude. Sara's musical influences include Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Bob Marley, Sleater Kinney, PJ Harvey and Neko Case. Her live shows capture the energy of dub hall reggae and hip hop, but with the more intimate exchange of acoustic guitar and strings. Sara's music works by bringing the audience into the folk rock genre from a contemporary female perspective with an attitude of"radical engagement." Her experiences in directing and performing theater in Philadelphia helped shape and inform her distinctive sound. For the"The Unauthorized E.P."- Sara fought hard against the album's release. She was in the studio literally yelling at the producer to take each song off the album and destroy all existing copies. The studio tracks had been originally stolen, and when the masters were eventually returned to the studio after an address mix-up with the warehouse, Sara had never heard the tapes. Word had spread among record producers about the raw beauty of the sessions. While Sara was very upset about their release, some music executives had began circulating a download of one of the tracks and deploring the lack of original female songwriting voices like hers. After enough public outcry and some legal victories, Sara eventually conceded that her music producer had some rights to the tracks, but ultimately it was her fans who deserved to have access to the songs. A victory for audiophiles, these four exquisite tracks mark an important time in her recording history- essential songwriting with a guitar and one mic. A small fire destroyed ten of the fourteen tapes, and arson was eventually ruled out. The four beautiful songs on this E.P. are the only surviving tracks from those sessions.
