Traditional Ghana music and original compositions by Kofi Ameyaw (gyil) and Mark Palms (banjo) with some songs of Mississippi & Louisiana seasoned with guest musicians from New Orleans - you get “gumbo A L’Afrique”. A month in Accra, Ghana with Kofi Ameyaw and his family, carrying two microphones, a laptop, mbox, and a fretless banjo led to this cd. It was Kofi, his brother Akwa, and his childhood friend Okutu who taught me the traditional Ghana songs. The field recordings include a farewell performance of Kpalongo by Okutu’s Ghana dance ensemble. Certain that we would recall the spirit of these songs in a New Orleans studio, we headed to the Crescent City to record and add a few guest musicians. Matt Callaway, guitarist from Detroit, came along for the ride adding his own Motor City polish.
