With their vinyl release Sun Heart Razor Burn, The Ex-Girlfriends Club has transformed itself from a lean monochrome wolf into a multi-headed polychrome monster. Sun Heart Razor Burn melds strident 60’s garage and fuzzy 90’s psychedelia, fueled by groove, menace, and pop swagger. The evolution of The Ex-Girlfriend Club’s sound can be traced to a lineup shift. Action Lord has moved from drums to guitar, and the band has added veteran Pink Snowflakes drummer Scotty Sounds. This allows for a precision rhythm section and a dynamic, two-guitar front. Orion and Action Lord alternate leads, threading heavy psych noise with delicate melodic filigree, while Karlito Franz holds the groove with an overdriven rumble. Albatross emerges as a persona-wielding storyteller in the tradition of Bob Dylan and Nick Cave, ranging through a terrain of politics, religion, mosquitos, birth, death, and of course rock ‘n’ roll.
