In 1973, I dropped out of Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia to study piano and music theory with Mrs. May Harrow, a semi-retired concert pianist. This experience fertilized a musical seed that had been planted years earlier while I was still in High School.After finishing graduate school with an MFA (in Painting) from Washington University in St Louis, and a career painting and designing for theatre and television, I moved from LA to Oakland where I began teaching Art. Settling for a time in Oakland, I resumed my musical endeavors after what had become a ten year hiatus. Beginning with lap steel -after hearing a street performer in SF- and then adding synthesizer and piano, I began to make recordings of my efforts. Because visual art and set design continue to be my 'day jobs', I have always referred to my music as"the Secret Project".With the encouragement of my graduate school buddy and former studio-mate Michael Eckersley, I've finally decided to make my years of playing and recording music available to a wider audience than just close friends, family and teaching colleagues who have been my listeners and critics for the past two decades.I record all this music with very little digital manipulation. It's mostly just a microphone and a multi-tracker and over the years trying to learn to hear everything that I would like to emerge from the mix. So here is the beginning of what I hope will continue by reaching more ears every year.
