About E&M and Redwoods on Mars:Redwoods on Mars is the first single off E&M's debut full-length album. E&M are a classically-trained trio making indie music they'd want to listen to on top of a hill in the Castro, San Francisco. Elysha Rom-Povolo and Mary Hansell both studied classical music since they were kids. They became friends in 2008 when they played together in the 8-piece indie collective, Photons, where Mary sang and played percussion and Elysha played keyboards and clarinet. In 2011, they formed E&M. Their first EP, Fingernails, combined a variety of sounds and styles. Their second EP gravitated toward pop but with a low-fi production vibe. Their third release, and first full-length, brings on the talented, and also classically-trained Evan Walker on bass. Due out in 2014, the album has a cleaner and more sophisticated sound than previous releases. It emphasizes a variety of rhythms and instruments with clarinet, autoharp, synthesizer, bells, hand percussion, and toy instruments featuring prominently against Mary's haunting vocals and Evan's active basslines. Inspirations include Etta James, Lou Reed, Lorde, Talking Heads, Electric Guest, Whitney Houston, Bat for Lashes, and many others. Fans of female-led groups like Haim or Florence and the Machine will find much to love here.
