Although this rendition of the Chase Morrin Trio (Jonathan Chapman - Bass, Jongkuk Kim - Drums) only officially formed a year and a half ago, it’s roots go much deeper. We have all known each other for many years, having played music in various sized groups and formats since the beginning of college. But it wasn’t until the Spring of 2015, that the initial sparks for this particular ensemble were created. The music featured in this album spans a large range of influences including jazz, classical, folk and rock, and has origins in a variety of places. Tunes like Groudon and Paper Thoughts started as Jazz Orchestra pieces. Turtle began as collective improvisation/experiment. I Never Learnt to Share, the only cover, arose from my childhood love of James Blake. In many ways Turtle represents the culmination of our undergraduate education: for myself NEC, for JK and Johny, Berklee College of Music. Although the members of this trio are now starting new life chapters in separate places, this album expresses the joy and hard work we put in to make this challenging music come to life.
