Founded in 2002 at Stanford University, Stanford Raagapella reimagines the music of South Asia in a choral setting. Sometimes tending toward classical and sometimes toward pop, our music blends melodies descending from South Asian musical traditions such as Hindustani and Carnatic classical with Western choral styles.Raag Time, our second album, features renditions of songs that draw upon a range of emotions and ideas: from the rapture of falling in love to the sadness of heartbreak, and from the utility of suffering to joyous exhortations to never lose hope. The arrangements stem from individual members' inspiration to reinterpret songs that they have found striking, and thus draw upon a range of sources and musical traditions. The languages sung in this album include English, Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu.Kimberly Raschka Sailor, a reviewer of our first album Raags To Riches, said of that album,"there is humor, there is warmth, there is talent, and there is fun"; all of these are very much part of each member's experience with Stanford Raagapella, and we'd be thrilled if these qualities have indeed found their way into our albums.
