Sign Of The Times is a very personal song to me. It can be a dangerous thing to mix politics and faith with music, but when that is what flows out of you, and you capture it, then it's all for nothing if you don't share it. This song is about the way I saw the world growing up, and the way things have changed over time. I've written many songs with"filler" lines, just to get to the chorus, but just about every line in this song means something to me.I am a Christian, and I live my daily life based on my believe in the teachings of the Bible and Jesus Christ. That doesn't mean I want to force-feed my beliefs down everyone elses throat, but I do believe there are some fundamental truths that a peaceful society should live by. As I have grown up, I have seen a shift in culture from the Christian principals the United States of America was founded on to a very secular, almost anti-God sentiment. The lines in the first verse,"I remember standing up in school. We'd pledge allegiance and bow our heads to pray. I remember the day our right to pray was taken away" mean a lot to me. I literally remember every day standing in grade school and praying over the intercom. Then prayer started to be taken out of schools. I remember a very specific Friday night football game in high school. We were told we would no longer be able to have a prayer before the game, so we had a moment of silence instead. I understand if you don't believe in God, and choose not to pray to Him...but what harm is there in the rest of us believers (the vast majority) praying to God for the safety of the players on the field? Really? Are you that offended that you fight to take away our right to pray even at a football game simply because you don't want to? I was very angered by this.Moving forward, I went on with my adult life and I began to understand all the struggles going on in day to day life. People out of work, losing their homes, struggling just to get by...yet so many people seem to think that politicians and government are able to solve all their problems. Too often, that faith in Government leads to people making decisions with their lives and with their vote that do not line up with the principals that our founding fathers believed in, both on a social level and a spiritual level. All of this frustration is what inspired me to write down my thoughts, which eventually became this song. Sign of the Times is a battle cry for those who want to see our government scaled down and let"We the People" make more decisions for ourselves, rather than government making them for us. I could go on and on into more detail, but I'll let the song speak for itself from here. I know there are some who will disagree with the opinions expressed in Sign of the Times, and It is not my intention to alienate those people I disagree with, but I do believe in standing up for what I think is right, and that is what I have done with this song.
