Virgin Island folk music started evolving around the early 1700s. Minstrels, or roaming musicians, played string instruments for various traditional events on days of saturnalia such as Christmas and national holidays. This folk music is an adaptation of European folk tunes, African bamboula and cariso, and the pre-Columbian Taino music traditions. The modern quadrille dance suite scratch band is linked to the early Virgin Island violin and banjo string bands. The fife and drum groups and the street theater minstrels provided entertainment for Africans and Europeans from during the baroque era. The music was adapted from diverse European countries such as Britain, Denmark, France, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Spain, and from the United States. The Old and new world music came together in the Virgin Islands and became Virgin Islands folk music.
