Jaggery is an art-rock collective who work the dark edge of a genre-defying musical style (darkwave jazz? avant chamber pop?). Fronted by Boston-based songstress Singer Mali Sastri ~ whose training in the expressive arts discipline Voice Movement Therapy is evident in her global-sized voice ~ the band suggests a classical, organic, avant-jazz-oriented Cocteau Twins or a “white witch” counter to the haunting Diamanda Galas. Mali’s voice can be an Enya-esque leaf floating in the breeze, and then become a Grace Slick-like Earth-shaking, Everest-sized volcano. She is flanked by a rotating lineup of musicians and instrumentation including drum kit, upright bass, harp, and viola. This “exotic musical mobile” evokes what Alice Coltrane’s 'Journey in Satchidananda' might sound like with Björk singing over the top of it. Jaggery (the word comes from the golden brown, Indian sugar) has toured nationally, and released five recordings: the 2004 In Lethe EP, the 2006 full-length Polyhymnia, 2010’s Upon A Penumbra, 2012’s Private Violence EP, and 2016's Crux. Jaggery have brought their dark, jazzy rock to the stage of Boston’s NEMO conference in 2005, NXNE in 2011, and have opened for Amanda Palmer and Wye Oak. In May 2015 the band was commissioned by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, to create and perform new music inspired by Leonardo da Vinci.
