“NWLYWD is a state of mind” is what you’ll often hear this Indie/Folk duo say in answer to questions about whether a name like theirs can weather the storm. The group consists of Sterling (vocals, guitar, percussion) and Sammy Wilson (vocals, guitar, keys, percussion), both born and raised in the fabulous Las Vegas.Sterling got his start with a series of Vegas punk bands that include Rooftop Theories and Shaker Heights Opera Co. In those bands he was privileged to play alongside greats like Against Me!, Apples in Stereo, and The Killers. Sammy on the other hand comes from an extremely musical family, and grew up writing to her hearts content, locked up in her room, singing so no one could hear. Sterling first saw Sammy when she was manning the door for her Father’s blues band Blue Soul, and although it was some time after that their romance bloomed, they always had a close musical connection and a strong friendship. NWLYWD (Newlywed) is an epic congruence of the souls of these two songwriters, but if you listen close you might hear the same passion from those younger days. And if you listen really close, you might get the feeling that they listen to some groovy stuff like: Bon Iver, The National, St Vincent, Built to Spill, Elliott Smith, Rocky Votolato, The Veils, Father John Misty, Fleet Foxes, Arcade Fire, The Smiths, and Jeff Buckley.Above all, these two married souls want to make real music.
