Hollye Dexter and the Brave Souls have successfully blurred the lines between pop, funk and folk to create their own original sound. Dexter's voice has been described as a cross between Dusty Springfield and Paula Cole, and her producer/guitar player husband Troy Dexter (Tower of Power, Stephen Bishop, Wilson Phillips) plays soulful guitar, piano and B3 on all tracks. This album was released several years after the Dexters' home and life burned to the ground. Homeless and penniless, they began again and found hope in the ashes- as well as in these songs. The Brave Souls have performed at numerous events, choosing to put focus on charity and community. In addition to such world famous venues as the Roxy and the Rose Bowl, they have performed numerous times for the American Cancer Society, Five Acres Foster Home and Veteran's Hospitals. When asked where the band's name came from, Dexter explains that almost every member in the band has survived some kind of life-threatening experience and has lived to tell about it."This band has a lot of heart and soul. Life is a gift. Music is a gift. We're happy to share it." Hollye had an unconventional childhood, having spent her early formative years on the road with her guitar player Dad, who was the only blue-eyed member of Little Richard's band, and started writing and performing in the coffeehouses and clubs at age fourteen with her songwriting partner Vonda Shepard. Her first ever live performance at the age of 11 was at the local talent contest at"Beef n' Barrel Restaurant", where she accompanied herself on a $15 guitar playing Beatles songs. Although she didn't win the free steak dinner, she has been hooked ever since. Hollye spent the early part of her career as a live and studio backup singer for other artists, but later defined herself as a solo artist. She has released two solo albums, one live album with her band PCH, and another compilation with the Music Heals Foundation. Hollye has written two memoirs and is co-author of the book, DANCING AT THE SHAME PROM (Seal Press). You can find her blogging about living an authentic life at www.hollyedexter.blogspot.com
