Rowan Kris Hill began singing “when she was in the cradle”, her grandmother remembered. Rowan never believed it until she heard her own grand daughter sing in her sleep at nine days old.Rowan (aka Kris Robinson) began performing in Vancouver, BC in 1964. She ventured to Seattle, WA, bursting into the coffee house circuit in 1965. I first heard Kris Robinson at The Null Set Coffee House in Olympia, Washington. Her voice suspended time, bringing clarity to the love, pain and struggles of the day and added depth to the popular “folkies” of the '60s.As an awed admirer, I described her voice as a combination of Joan Baez and Janis Joplin. She was equally at home singing pure English ballads, funky jug band tunes or painful contemporary songs like Buffy Sainte Maries’ Cod’ine.Home”steading” her way from Canada's Prince Edward Island to the Isle of Graemsay just off Stromness in the Orkney chain off Scotland, she now resides in Llanidloes, Wales, the ethereal land of poets and musicians.Mother of four, with five grandchildren, four born in Orkney, one in Canada and twice a great grandmother, Rowan is currently working on her second CD.Michael S.
